I didn’t know what to expect on the Sanford Limo Cycle Tour, except I knew it was some sort of pub crawl. My friend Dennis Cobb set it up, and Dennis is a man of discernment, great taste, athleticism and solid drinking abilities… so I trusted him with the details. Rebecca and I just showed up at the appointed hour. We drove down an obscure Sanford side street and finally arrived at a funky little industrial park with a couple of offices. Went in, read the rules, signed some waivers: drinking in public, blah blah blah. Then we met our fellow passengers: friends of Dennis we really didn’t know. Couples, mostly; a dozen of us. We did the usual tentative, friendly-but-awkward greetings, and then we met Jake, our driver, and Courtney, our bartender.
Yeah, you read that right: the Limo Cycle is basically a bar on wheels. You sit on either side of it, on a bar stool that’s shaped like a bicycle seat and comes equipped with pedals. 10 of the 14 seats have these pedals, and to make it go at all, you all have to keep pumping them pretty fast. It’s a little bit disconcerting, because as hard as you’re working, the thing goes about 5 mph (well, 7 if you really get going). Sanford appears pretty flat, but we discovered it has some subtle but definite grades that really impact you going “uphill.” Jake kept up a pretty funny flow of wisecracks from the driver’s seat the whole time.
You bring your own beverages on the tour, which are stored in an ice chest under the bar. No bottles or glass of any kind; if you bring wine, they pour it into a plastic pitcher. You can’t serve yourself – you have to ask Courtney to pour. This works out fine, as you’re busy pedaling anyway, and working up quite a sweat. The Limo Cycle has a canopy with little fans and misters to keep you cool, and a great sound system you can connect to your phone or iPod. So what with the music, the constant and somewhat absurd effort, and the alcohol, we found the ice melting pretty quickly with our little group, and soon we were a merry band of loudmouths inching through the streets of downtown Sanford, holding up traffic and toasting and waving wildly to the al fresco diners that line the sidewalks there.
We hit some pretty sweet bars, too. The Imperial at Washburn Imports is an improvement on its excellent sister location in Ivanhoe Village, with a larger and better-appointed bar and a nice exotic jumble-shop atmosphere. Good quiet place to talk and get better acquainted. We finally ended up at Buster’s Bistro, way down a torn-up street lit only by an eerie floodlight. The end-of-the-world vibe contrasted nicely with the elegance of Buster’s, which serves only Belgian beer from a row of 18 taps. I’m not a big fan of Belgian beer, which tastes a little too much like mince pie for me, but there was a cool live band and we were all pretty slammed by that point anyway.
Then it was back to our Limo Cycle and we pedaled our way back down the darkened residential streets of Sanford… quieter now, like friends who’d had the full tour.
More info...
The Limo Cycle is available for rental 6 days per week (Tues – Sun), 10:00am – 10:00pm (10:00am -8:00pm on Sunday). You can bring your group of 8-15 and the entire cycle is yours for two or more hours. Pricing starts at $175.00 per hour for the entire cycle.
Smaller groups can join the Sunday Funday tours at 12:30pm and 3:00pm. Bring at least 5 folks and grab a seat for just $30.00pp.
Through April 30th, Lymo Cycle is offering our small group outings on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 5:30pm or 8:00pm.
The Limo Cycle is a “bring your own..” event. You’re welcome to bring beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks, or visit local pubs and enjoy a drink there. Reservations are required 48 hours in advance for all of the rides and are subject to availability. They go out rain, or shine and only cancel for the most severe weather.
Picture this: A few hours spent walking down tree lined, brick streets admiring beautiful Spanish architecture and unique details of the past. Imagine yourself ducking into a quaint shop or eatery to sample some locally sourced items to keep you eagerly awaiting your next stop. Now tell me, where would you guess this kind of an experience would happen? A quaint village in France? Or perhaps you are thinking a small town in Spain? Would you believe me if I said it is right here in Central Florida? Believe it!
This weekend, my husband and I went on the Park Avenue Walking Food Tour, hosted by the Orlando Food Tour Company (www.orlandofoodtours.com). This is one of the most unique and fun ways to EXPERIENCE Winter Park, even if you’ve been there countless times before. The guides, Kiel and Reid, do a great job in keeping the group engaged at all times and maximizing the sampling experience at each location.
The tour takes about 2.5 to 3 hours and covers about 1.5 miles with stops at 5 to 7 different places. All food and drink tastings are covered in your $47 ticket purchase. Booking in advance is required and tours currently run on Saturdays and Sundays beginning at 11:30am. I'll keep my lips sealed about exactly where you'll be stopping so I don't ruin any surprises for you.
Our guides clearly took the time (and great care, might I add) to research the history behind the architecture and beauty that makes up Winter Park, and they deliver it in a way that is interesting and entertaining. Do you know who the founding fathers of Winter Park are? Do you know what famous architects fell in love with the area and invested millions of dollars to establish the Park Avenue we know and love? Of course you can Google the answers and find out, but taking this tour will give you the human connection to the technical answers. Our guides transformed what could be a typical tour from eatery to eatery into a sensory immersion of Winter Park’s charming history and amazing local chow.
We had 12 people in our group, which translated into an instant group of new friends on this experience. You share fun facts, food and time with this group.
My husband and I returned to some of the locations that we visited that day and saw other people from the group wandering back to stops as well (you get coupons for the places featured on the tour!). We stayed not only to enjoy the beautiful landscape and the wonderful shops that we discovered on the tour, but also to really appreciate the history that we had been exposed to during our time on Park Avenue. We should always be open to learning about the things that shape our beautiful cities in Central Florida, and hey, if people throw in food & booze while you do it, that’s a win/win in my books.

Marc and I were blown away by a recent visit to Lake Lotus Park, arguably one of Altamonte Springs’ best-kept secrets. We had no idea that such a tranquil and meticulously maintained lakeside hiking trail existed just a few miles from our home.
The 1.7-mile trail, which winds its way past Lake Lotus and under towering cypress trees, is primarily made up of wooden boardwalks and level footpaths.
Along the way you’ll see lots of birdlife, maybe even a gator or two. Be sure to step into the Windows to the Lake pavilion, which showcases the area’s flora and fauna via a permanent wildlife exhibit.
While alcohol is prohibited, you can definitely bring in a cooler or basket with picnic provisions. There are lots of spots along the trail to settle into a bench and enjoy your lunch.
Lake Lotus Park is open Thursday through Sunday 8:30 am to 5:30 pm. You can drive right in Thursdays and Fridays, but on weekends you’ll park on the opposite side of SR 414 (Maitland Blvd) and take the trolley into the park. Trolleys come every ten minutes or so.
This 150-acre nature preserve is located at 1153 Lake Lotus Park Road in Altamonte Springs, just a few miles west of Interstate 4 on SR 414 (Maitland Blvd). There are onsite publics restrooms.
Oh, and no dogs.
For more information, check out this very helpful website, Florida Hikes, which will offer lots of tips and details about the Lake Lotus hike as well as many others in the area.

Valentine's Day is right around the corner! Consider surprising your sweetie with the Orlando Date Night Jar, which comes with sixty local date night ideas for you to explore together. Head to the GIFT SHOP for more details.
Get me started talking about date night ideas for Orlando and you probably won’t be able to shut me up. I love, love, love finding out new things for couples to do together. But we haven’t done it all… far from it. There are still a ton of awesome date night spots and restaurants on our bucket list, and several more we’d love to experience again. So, here are the items on my 2014 Date Night Bucket List. What’s on yours?
Victoria and Albert's
I’m always game for a great meal but part of me is just curious: is this legendary restaurant really as fabulous as everyone says it is? I’ll let you know once I find out first-hand.
The Chef’s Table at Luma
This experience always gets a ton of votes during the annual Date Night Awards each February but we've yet to check it out. We’re looking forward to experiencing why people love this epicurean escapade so much.
Date night cooking class at Truffles and Trifles
These couple-focused classes, usually scheduled one Saturday each month, always sell out, which tells me they must be pretty great. For the $130-$140 per couple price tag, I should hope so.
Orlando Improv
I’ve yet to be disappointed by a comic at this cozy comedy club at Pointe Orlando. It’s time to head back again, maybe after dinner at one of our favorite restaurants: Cuba Libre.
Culinary Classes at East End Market
Since East End opened this past fall, I have been dutifully checking their calendar every few weeks to see when they would launch their culinary education programming. Alas, it has begun and we're super psyched to try at least a few this year.
The Rusty Spoon
Lots of restaurants are touting farm-to-fork fare but this is one of the few downtown eateries that’s truly sourcing from local farms. I can’t wait to try the house made pickles!
Cress Restaurant
James Beard nominee and recent guest in Emeril’s traveling culinary show, Cress is definitely worthy of the drive to DeLand.
The Goblin Market
Same goes for this tucked away Mount Dora eatery, which I hear is one of Lake County’s very best restaurants.
K Restaurant
It’s shocking, seriously unbelievable that we still haven’t dined at this Orlando favorite. I can’t wait to wander into the backyard kitchen garden to sip a cocktail after dinner.
Sushi Pop
I am constantly seeing people post their foodie pics on Facebook after visiting this Oviedo gem. Even today I overheard someone talking about how great the food is at Sushi Pop. She suggested I order the “Dirty South” dessert, advice I can’t wait to follow.
“Once” by Broadway Across America
A lot of fabulous stage productions will make their way through Orlando in 2014, including Evita and Jersey Boys, but the one I am most excited about is Once, an atypical love story/musical. Marc and I loved the movie and eagerly anticipate it being brought to life on stage.
Hamilton's Kitchen
Have you seen the Alfond Inn? WOW! If the food is as good as the setting, this dinner promises to be fabulous.
The Courtesy Bar’s Cocktail Class
I definitely will NOT be the DD the night we try this cocktail class, but even though I am such a lightweight when it comes to liquor, I’m really excited to learn more about the art of mixology and how to incorporate things like bitters in classic cocktails.
I'd love to hear what's on your 2014 date night bucket list! Leave a comment below.
Last week The Orlando Weekly unveiled its list of the 100 Things You Must Do in Orlando Before You Die. This comprehensive catalogue of bucket list experiences provides a stellar source for date night ideas. Here are a few of my favorites plus a link to the full list:
Check out the complete list of 100 ideas here.
Next time you’re planning some couple time, consider taking a short road trip. There are some pretty cool experiences within a 90-minute trip from Orlando. Here are three of my favorites:
1 Safari Wildness, Lakeland
Daily safari tours at 10 am and 1 pm take small groups across this animal reserve’s 260 aces of uplands and wetlands where everything from eland and zebra to water buffalo and ostriches wander freely in the warm Florida sun. Besides the opportunity to feed several of these animals, many of which approach the safari vehicle without inhibition, Safari Wilderness also offers the opportunity to hand-feed lemurs, who gently pluck grapes from the hands of guests gathered within their enclosure.
Cost: $70 per adult
2 Segway Tour, Mount Dora
Traverse this entire town in just over an hour on this no sweat 7-mile tour past Lake Dora and through the charming downtown district. Tours are Tuesday - Sunday 10:00 am, noon and 2:00 pm. While in town, grab some grub at one of many great local eateries, including The Goblin Market, a local favorite hidden down a bricked side street. Cody’s on 4th, a chic little sandwich shop, is a great option for a casual lunch.
Cost: $49 + tax
3 Comb Jelly Bioluminescent Tour
Launching from the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, Day Away Kayak Tours takes adventurists on a short kayak paddle out onto the Indian River and Mosquito Lagoon in search of the bioluminescent comb jelly that makes its home here beginning each October. When the water is disturbed, the comb jelly emit a light that looks like an underwater fireworks show. Tours depart select weeknights starting at 5:30 pm.
Cost: $34 per person
I recently met Ezra Simmons, owner of the Orlando Sport and Social Club, who really turned me on to the idea of adult recreational sports leagues as a great way for couples to spend quality time together.
“People get to play sports in school and college and then suddenly you graduate and you’re stuck behind a desk,” says Ezra, who offers a year-round selection of intramural sports leagues. “We have about 300 teams in five different sports every season, mostly co-ed.”
While Ezra doesn’t specifically aim his leagues at couples, naturally many gravitate to the club’s fun and non-competitive vibe. “We have a lot of couples sign up but we also have had a lot of singles meet, start dating and marry inside the club.” That list includes Ezra and his wife, who met on a flag football league a few years ago. He’s even seen a marriage proposal on the softball field.
“You don’t need to join as a full team, you can sign up as a couple and we can assign you to a team,” says Ezra, who offers kickball, flag football, sand volleyball, softball, and soccer leagues on various nights and afternoons all week long mainly at parks in Winter Park, downtown Orlando and Casselberry.
Orlando Sport and Social Club aims its intramurals at young professionals with the majority of participants being 23-40. 90% of leagues are co-ed. There are no membership fees, only per-season fees to join a league, about $60-$70 per person.
Ezra runs a new 7-week season (with 2 tournament weeks) each winter, spring, summer and fall with registration opening about a month before each season starts. He also plans bar crawls, happy hours, tournaments, and fun runs throughout the year.
“It’s been a great networking avenue and a way to expand a couple’s social circle, especially for people who work a lot or have just moved to Orlando,” Ezra says.
